Interesting you should bring up this topic Ken. Next month I will put in a phone line from Time Warner Cable (where my Roadrunner internet connection is from) that has unlimited incoming and outgoing calls for $39 / month.

I think that and a new tollfree connection through http://www.tollfreelive.com for 29.95 / month I will cut phone costs around here by 80% or so.

tollfreelive offers the user:
• A toll-free phone number (e.g. 1-800 number) is included with our service!
• multiple extensions / mailboxes on a toll free 800 number
• sound like a Fortune 500 company!
• get a formal "press 1, press 2, ..." auto attendant menu
• calls are secretly transferred to your home, cell, office phone number...
• no hardware or new phone lines required. 800 number works with existing lines.
• each extension on your 800 number will have its own voicemail box
• music or promotional "message on hold" during call transfer

Of course, I'm still investigating to make certain it will all work together, but in my office where I work 4 different businesses, this will save money BIGTIME!

The only downside is that it uses about 1/4th of my 384K uplink bandwidth DURING the call. The RT31P2 Linksys router is smart enough to take bandwidth only during your call. Vonage seems a slick outfit and has many many free services that usually cost extra.

Ken

those rates are reasonable. I'v been playing with the idea of switching to Vonage after seeing all those TV ad's about them. Have you noticed any down sides to using Vonage?

We use our telephones a lot. We call borrowers to confirm appointments, we call signing agencies to ask about work orders and when edoc will arrive, and of course: we call to ask where o where is that overdue check. We FAX completion, sometimes many pages of the documents (if there is NO right-to-cancel)and it will be immediate funding. Clearly the telepone is an expense. Well, I have a broadband cable connection and recently added a Vonage telephone line. I have 3 phone lines total. My "incoming" for customers. My Vonage for toll calls, and a spare regular line for outgoing toll free. When i have to fax 13 pages of a job's history for payment it dont cost me a cent. The Vonage packages are 500 min for 15$ a month or unlimited use for 25$ (my choice). I just "switch" the fax to the Vonage line for outgoing and "switch" (a radio shack item) it back when done. Those signing agency LOOONG waits on hold to reach the "paymaster" dont bother me a bit. I'm working at the computer and the speakerphone is not costing me a cent. For the truly ambitious (I did not do this) Vonage offers for 5$ a month an 800 number + a few cents for incoming minutes. Now that the calls are free i confirm, double check, and even give some "thank you" calls to my "key clients". When is the last time YOU called a client to thank them for giving you business? Would'nt you remember someone who thanked you?

Regards,
Ken
