My routine is to let them know over the phone this transaction is CASH or Credit Card.....NO CHECKS!! Also if the notary cannot be complete for reasons beyond my control I will reimburse them $20. My base fee with notary stamp is $45 for individuals.

Also upon arrival, I'm usually greeted by the person who is going to pay me, I tell them I will be ready to notarize in just a few minutes, we have to "take care of the fee/money transaction first" I've not had anyone balk at that and they usually have the cash ready for me. I then proceed with the notary process.

In general notary work I make it clear on the phone (especially in nursing home situations) what my fee is, which includes $10 for notarization. In let them know that in the event I can't complete the notarization for whatever reason, then the fee less $10 is still due and payable for time and travel. Florida allows notaries to refuse service if the signers refuse to pay.

And I do collect up front before the notarization but after determining if I can or cannot do the notarization. My routine is arrive, meet with the people, speak with the signer, (and by now I know if the signer is competent enough for my purposes or not) get the ID, complete my journal, collect my money, provide a receipt, notarize.

Note this does not refer to loan signings - they're a whole different animal.

One of our notaries thinks it might be illegal NOT to collect your travel fee at the door when arriving at an appointment.

Imagine that you are at a signing, and you have not collected a dime. You are seated in front of the signer. Let's say the signer is drugged at a hospital, mentally out to lunch, or doesn't have proper identification. Another situation is that the signer has not been informed about signing the document and doesn't want to.

If you didn't collect your fee at the door, you will feel PRESSURED to get the documents notarized even though it is against your better judgment. That makes you have an INTEREST or beneficial interest of $40 travel fee -- in having the documents notarized which might be considered illegal.

All I can say is, "Hmmm".
