I turned down an assignment for this company after they sent me these instructions for a Debt Settlement Closing.

In the State of California is is illegal for anyone to represent themselves as a Paralegal without the required training. I informed the company of this and they said "well we will just take you off and find another Notary."

"...For this assignment you will be representing Credit Advocates Law Firm, LLP as a paralegal to meet with their prospective client in a Face to Face Transaction."

"...There is one spot for you, the paralegal to sign."

California legislation (AB 1761) makes it unlawful for persons to identify themselves as paralegals unless they possess one of the following four requirements:

1. A certificate of completion from a paralegal program approved by the American Bar Association.

2. A certificate of completion from a paralegal program at, or a degree from, a postsecondary institution that requires the successful completion of a minimum of 24 semester, or equivalent, units in law-related courses and that has been accredited by a national or regional accrediting organization or approved by the Bureau for Private Postsecondary and Vocational Education.

3. A baccalaureate degree or an advanced degree in any subject, a minimum of one year of law-related experience under the supervision of an attorney who has been an active member of the State Bar of California for at least the preceding three years or who has practiced in the federal courts of this state for at least the preceding three years, and a written declaration from this attorney stating that the person is qualified to perform paralegal tasks.

4. A high school diploma or general equivalency diploma, a minimum of three years of law-related experience under the supervision of an attorney who has been an active member of the State Bar of California for at least the preceding three years or who has practiced in the federal courts of this state for at least the preceding three years, and a written declaration from this attorney stating that the person is qualified to perform paralegal tasks. This experience and training shall be completed no later than December 31, 2003.

Yes, they are from Henderson, NV.

They called me initially for debt consolidation. I had never done one before at that time, and they walked me through it. I didn't see any conflict in what I was being asked to do. The pay didn't seem much at that time but I wanted to learn what was involved. Turns out the packages are tiny and it takes 15 minutes tops. Debt Cons. was all I was doing for them.

Unfortunately, the last time they called I didn't pick up (or they didn't say) that it was a refi and I don't do edoc refis for $75. I completed that one since I agreed to it, but now I know to make sure to ask if it is a refi or debt cons. before I accept and agree on the fee.

Sometimes they call and sometimes they send an email alert with a job opening. Pay attention to what type of job they are hiring for. Except for the hiccup with the refi, company is professional and pays on time.

I have done several for this company and they are always nice, I personally love that they send out an email and who ever clicks first gets the job, and they pay very very quickly. I am not sure where they are located.

Just had to reject a debt settlement signing with these folks for several reasons:

1) One of their agents was rude & impatient with me when I explained that I needed to confer with the powers-that-be in my state before I would sign legal documents stating that I was serving in the capacity of a paralegal. I am a notary, not a paralegal and have qualms about presenting myself as such. I just wanted to be sure I wasn't going to get cross-ways with regulators in my state. The agent got testy with me because I was concerned about safeguarding my professional standards and reputation.

2) They only wanted to pay 1/2 of my standard fee. They initially agree to pay most of my fee, but then sent a confirmation with a significantly lesser amount listed.

3) I have a regular client who contracts with me to provide the same service and pays my full fee. I feel like I would be cheating that client to do the same work for someone else at a much lesser rate.

After several phone calls with no satisfactory resolution, I decided these folks were not worth my time. I choose not to do business with anyone who will not support me in my efforts to ensure I do the best job that I can for all of the parties involved.

I just did a signing for them and was paid in 7 days. Not sure if they are the same as the NV company.
