Thank you all for this information! WOW!

I pick up my supplies from the box (phew), but I do sign the signature line! So I guess I'll make that a lot less legible from now on! I do put the borrower's last name only on the reference...

This info was SO helpful!

Linda,

Yeah, I'm thinking even if the borrower points UPS in my direction from my business card (I'm sure most of which get lost a few days after I hand them out), they're not going to be able to collect from me. I don't have an account, UPS doesn't have my credit card number, and there's nothing on the airbill that links me to the shipment, except for maybe my signature which is illegible chicken scratch.

I'm glad I read this post though, especially where Lee from AR talked about how they can link you through reference numbers on the slips if you order the supplies online. I didn't know that, and I almost ordered a bunch of supplies from Fedex. Instead, I just went out and got a stack of envelopes and blank air bills for all the couriers and I'll be using those from now on.

I feel so bad for the notary in Tucson who posted on NR. She's getting stuck with 5 UPS bills from Blue Sky Title (AKA Blue Sky Settlement Services), PLUS she's probably not going to see the $500+ she's owed for those 5 signings. What a low-down contemptible thing to do: close your doors and not only stiff your notaries, but leave them with the delivery bills.

I don't have accounts with any of the major carriers - I pick my airbills up at the drop boxes or at the local Mailbox Store...hand write them out with none of my own personal information. Not having an account does not create an issue for me as far as package pickup is concerned - I'm so far out here they don't provide pickup service at my home!!!

I have one company who (a) told me to put myself as shipper; and (b) wanted me to sign off on the bottom waiving signature...I refused on both counts, telling them I would not allow my name to show up ANYWHERE on the airbill - ESPECIALLY waiving signature...

I agree with you, Mike - I don't know HOW they can possibly track you down without any of your info showing up on the airbill..unless they get your info from the recipient. JMHO

Another point of information: Pick up the labels at dropboxes. If you order them, they have a record of the numbers and can track same back to you even if you do not put any personal identifying info on the label.

Joan,

That's very good advice, especially for people who might be new to this business. I have a question for you though: I did a signing for a company that just went belly up. I put the borrower's name and info in the sender section of the air bill. UPS was the carrier. I did not put my name or phone number anywhere on the air bill. I do not have a UPS account, either. How would UPS find me? The only way I could think of that happening is if the borrower gave them the information from the business card I left her.

Another notary here in AZ says she's getting charged back for five of the airbills she filled out for this belly-up company, but that was because she had put her contact information in the sender section.

Does UPS still have a way of tracking me down?

-Mike

I know the reason notary/loan signers go on the Internet and print out the FedEx/UPS labels because it is so much more convenient/faster and looks more professional than a hand written label.

The sender and the receiver are always the same name and never put your name or phone number on one of these labels. Take the time to hand write these labels.

Don't put the borrowers name on it because UPS/FedEx will find you and charge you. Don't think the borrower is going to get stuck with the charges because they won't.

When companies go out of business one of the first things they do is cancelled their account with FedEx & UPS and then the notary gets stuck because he/she put their information on the air bill.
