My 3 cents: if I get a call from a new company while I'm out and away from my computer, I just accept the job, get the rep's name, the company name, and the business address and phone number. Then I check them out online when I get home (before confirming the appointment with the borrower), and if they have really negative comments on the message boards and/or a lot of complaints at the Better Business Bureau, I call the person back and "return" the job and explain, "You have X number of complaints on the BBB from notaries alleging non-payment for services provided to your company."
Luckily, this is rare for me and I don't have to do it very often. The reps are never very happy about it when I do, but I figure I don't have much to lose - what are they going to do, get really super mad and PAY me?

I am just reading about a particular company who hires notaries who is in financial trouble. I don't want to mention names. They were not paid by their clients and are now struggling to pay their notaries. They are structuring their debts so they can pay out part of what they owe. They had to freeze salaries of employees too. Ouch. Scary. The moral of the story is to research who you work for. The three minutes of internet research per company can save you thousands in the long run not to mention the unnecessary grief. |
