Hi Sandra,

This has been discussed at length for years now. The problem is as long as there are notaries that still accept these low fees the signing companies will stay in business. There are many folks that feel that 40.00-50.00 for a couple of hours of work isn't bad because they were making the same amount for 8 hours of work on a regular job. What they haven't factored in is what their actual costs are; such as time, gas, supplies wear and tear (car and other office equipment), cell, etc. Some feel they are retired and have nothing better to do so they take these low fees. What they don't realize is that they are hurting the industry. We need to stick together...but I won't hold my breath because I surely will die.

When you turn down a lowball request or explain your fees to a lowball SS they take you off their list and your phone won't ring as often. I look at this as a good thing

I have a question as to fees the Notary receives. I am requesting no less than $125.00 for a refinance package. When it is a piggyback I charge conditionally more. Why are the signing companies trying to restrict the only profession that will give them the best signings. Many will want to give less than $100.00 for edocs and signing. My edoc charges are an extra $25.00. I am not having a lot of problems now, but for a while, I was receiving calls for $40 to $65. There are hours involved in this. Even in downloading and putting the package together with making sure all is there you will spend at least an hour. Then you go to te borrower's, you also must remind them of their witnesses if they need one and in the state of Lousiana there is a requirement of 2. When they don't want anyone to know their personal business, I try to find someones to go with me. You go to the home, spend an hour there. Then maybe fax back to them and then back to the UPS or FED-X. As a notary, I can stay home and make $65.00 in a small time frame. Most of the time I have spent at least 3 to 5 hours on a Notary package. I am not working on an hourly commission but these fees are almost non existent for me. I feel that the Mortgage companies need to be compensating the notary for their final ability to bring in their loan.

My full gist in this is that the Notary is the most responsible position and they should be paid for their expertise and their signing as a professional.
