There are two types of notaries in Kentucky. You can become a special commission notary, but that limits you to only being able to notarize documents that are to be recorded in Kentucky. However, a special commission notary may CROSS STATE LINES to perform their notarizations of these recorded documents. A notary public state at large, may only perform notary acts within the state boundaries, but the documents can be recorded in other states too. The secretary of state's office is the office that appoints
notaries.
