IL - Other Information of Interest
To become an Illinois notary public you must be a U.S. citizen which is
a somewhat unusual rule since most other states only require the applicant
to be a resident of the state. Here is some text from the Illinois notary
public website regarding this:
Notaries are appointed by the Secretary of State for a four year term of
office. An applicant for a commission must (1) be a U.S. citizen or an
alien lawfully admitted as a permanent resident, (2) be a resident of
Illinois for at least 30 days, (3) be at least 18 years old, (4) be able to
read and write English, (5) not have any felony convictions, and (6) have
not had their notary commission revoked during the past 10 years.
