Notary Acts that a notary is authorized to perform vary from state to state. Most states allow notaries to do Acknowledgments, Jurats, Oaths, Affirmations, and Protests. However there are other acts such as Safety Box openings, Marine Protests, Proofs of Execution, Certifications of Powers of Attorneys or other documents, Copies of Journal Entries, Depositions, e-notarizations, Attestations, Photocopying documents, supervising others photocopying, taking a renunciation of dower or inheritance, weddings, and more.

Definition 1:
A notary act is any act that a notary public of this state is authorized to perform, and includes taking an acknowledgment, administering an oath or affirmation, taking a verification upon oath or affirmation, witnessing or attesting a signature, certifying or attesting a copy, and noting a protest of a negotiable instrument. Each notarial act in California requires a journal entry.
