I have issues w/ SS, Escrow, Title, whomever, that doesn't want me taking calls during a signing. I'm self employed, I've more than likely left messages for a Borrower to call me back to confirm an appointment, and I'm getting calls to handle signings. So, for me to answer my phone is very, very important to me. If someone wants to know if I answer my phone during a signing for them. Bring it. I do a volume business as does most organizations do. So, if you have an issue with it, don't call me. If you like the fact I answer my phone, I'm sure there are those that like that even more so. Good business, means good communications.

When I had a business years ago that was as unique as signing agent is now, there were people who thought it was a good idea and would call me for prices and other information. I could identify them when they called and had answers that wouldn't turn anyone away. A couple tried to be my competitor but soon quit. I'm thinking that this escrow agent was calling for information before calling you. That is perfectly acceptable in buisness. The other aspect of her contacts leave much to be desired, though.

Okay, here's part II of this absurd Escrow Agent. Apparently this lady assigned this signing to me without any confirmation or contact of me. I got a call from the borrower today saying she was told I was supposed to have contacted her by now for tomorrow's signing. She told me she could make a one hour window tomorrow. I asked how I'd be paid and the borrower offered to pay me directly. Okay, so I liked that answer.

Then I got a call from Inland Title telling me she was the one who called a while back. As if I'm supposed to accept her job we never agreed to, I told her she needed to send me a confirmation of the job with my $100 fee agreement. She ends up sending me an email without any fee agreement as follows:

Please contact ********* at ******* to schedule the notary signing for their refinance. I will be paying your directly out of the proceeds on either Monday the 25th or Tuesday the 26th. Please provide the address to send the payment as well as the payee information.
Please feel free to contact me with any questions at the number below.
_____

So I sent her one last email request for my agreed to fee I thought she'd have no problem with and this is what I got back:

"I apologize that is what I was trying to clarify with you during our phone conversation. We don't have a fee agreement but I can send you a copy of the settlement statement showing I've collected for the fee from the client tomorrow. Will that suffice? I apologize again, we normally don't use mobile notary so I'm not familiar with your procedures."
_________

That one really blew me away at the idiocy of a person who doesn't know the basic procedure of hiring someone with a basic contractual agreement to pay someone for their services.

I wrote her back "we do have an agreement that my fee is $100".

She then gives in and writes she will send me a check for $100.

At this point I'm not so sure I trust this lady especially since the borrower could pay me directly and get reimbursed.

I am with you about these calls. I had a signing scheduled for an Annuity. He went on to for sure me that there would only be 5 to 6 pages to be notarized. I received the signing package by E-document and it had 10 pages to be notarized alone.

Is this common that we will be lied to about the amount of work to receive a lower projected price?

Just a heads up, I got a very unusual phone call from an agent trying to get a quote from me without presenting herself as being part of an escrow company. Prior to getting the quote she made it seem like she was an individual in Spokane wanting mobile notary services in my area (such as for a relative I've received many before). After I told her it was $10 per signature I had to probe as to what she had available. She then told me it was a refinance package and I had to even probe further to ask if she was an agent with a title company.

The person was from Inland Professional Title in Spokane WA and the signing she had wasn't even yet available so she said she'd call back but I'm sure she's shopping around for lower notary fees since mine was $100.

I don't know what's happening in the economy right now, but I'm getting some pretty crazy phone calls lately from all kinds of low end agencies I've never heard of, and then this.

Sincerely yours,
