that is probably what I should do with a new signing/title company, but I seldom get new companies and 70% of my business is between 35-75 miles away. This is a sparsley populated region. my usual companies know that and have my fee schedule in their system.

When the distance is 'too far', I tell them during the initial call that full fee will be expected if it goes south. If they can't/won't 'put that in writing', they can find another notary. Works for me.

If you don't value your time and experience, nobody else will.

As far as any attempts to discredit them to Citibank may be fine but the fact that you are cashing the check gives an appearance that you are accepting the payment as is so it will be hard to claim they are cheats in this instance.

It may be best to chalk this up as a good lesson and make a list of areas you will cover at what rate and how much you charge for a no-sign.

I got a call from Equifax last week. It was for a neighboring town, 75 miles away. I took it for $150. The docs were late, then when I sat down with the borrower the name of the city where the property is located was wrong. He was not comfortable with signing the docs as such. Now Equifax wants me to accept $50 for 3-1/2 hours work, 150 miles drive. It is a take it or leave it situation.
After I receive the check and copy it, I am sending my confirmation, copy of the check and copy of the email correspondence to Citibank. I will tell them that if Equifax cheats me, they will cheat your too. I know that Equifax will blow the roof off calling me unprofessional and anything else they can get away with, but I will never work for them again. Besides, Service Link does most of the Citibank work in this area.
