When I am away from home I ask the signing company to map quest the location so I know the distance before I give them an answer. They are always willing to do this plus like others have said I can ask additional questions like what type of loan and if there are fax backs.

For a reverse application I add an extra $20 as I know it will always take more time. Time is money.

95% of the time I give an answer right away. Like Doris pointed out you need to come up with a data sheet of your fees based on mileage, country, etc and have it handy. I personally started out with a list of all the major towns/cities in my county and neighboring counties and put them in price ranges based on milage. However, a year later I basically go by county. Base fee for local, +$25 for neighboring, and +$50-$75 for two counties over.

That 5% of time is when it's a company I never worked with. I want to research them first either here or on notary rotary to see if they're a good company, but I don't always have that option. In anycase if I do accept a signing from a new company I make sure to research right away. If they have numerous late or no payments I'll stright up contact them and cancel stating either as the reason. I don't really care if I upset bad signing companies.

But again like Doris poitns out, It depends on the situation. I have a new company thats been giving me a lot of work recently and they had a signing in a town I hadn't heard of. They said it was in my county so I charge my going fee for that. Well turns out it was a neighboring county but I let it go that time because I appreciate all the recent business. At the same time I made sure to give them a friendly reminder that my fee is higher for neighboring counties.

However another time I had a company schedule a signing with me the day prior. However, they didn't get the docs to me until 30 min before the scheduled appointment and top of that they were requesting fax backs which they said nothing about on the phone. I didn't appreciate the last minute nature so I told them I charged an addition fax back fee and they would have to pay it or I was going to cancel on them. Because it was so last minute they had to accept. Probably won't hear from them again but turn out to be a stressful nightmare signing anyways so wouldn't mind.

So yeah got to play it by ear but it's good to have an outline to follow.

Never tried it, but nothing ventured/nothing gained. I really don't think they'll wait, but it would be a knowledge-gaining experiment.

I ask for exact address (rural/small town area with enormous zip codes where one size does not fit all) and they are willing to wait while I mapquest it and ask add'l questions (mostly to keep them engaged while I'm checking distance/drive time) so I can give a fee quote that is, in fact, profitable.

If you don't value your time and experience, nobody else will.

I give them an answer right away. I have a set fee for a certain distance from my home that will cover all my costs plus give me a profit, and I try to remember the zip codes in that area. If I'm at home and I'm not sure about the location, I ask for the address and look it up quickly. If I'm in the car and I'm not sure about the address, I might say yes with the understanding that I'll look it up when I get home or I'll just say no. It depends on the company and the relationship we have with each other.

When I get a call for a signing I feel I have to think quick and give an answer with my fee and figure out the mileage. It's not like I feel I have time to get to my computer to see how much they paid me last time or how many miles it is to the signing. Do you ever say "Let me do some checking and call you right back?"
