WHen the announcement is made they will be reading everything and I can see they are not an Eveyly Wood graduate, I call the signing co and title and get permission to leave their set with them and advise of the situation. I am not paid to sit while they read. I tell them to call me when they are ready to sign, because thats where my role begins, and what I am paid to do. The other reason is, I dont want to be involved if they are less than willing and may acuse me later on of hassling them into signing etc etc etc. At this point, they are less than willing as far as I am concerned, and I get out of there fast as I can.

I have learned that people who have endless time on their hands tend to not respect other people's time constraints. Also, there is a term for this type of gentleman -- I call people like him -- "readers".

Last night I completely lost control of a one person signing. There were no babies, kids, dogs or distractions, just a 71 year old former real estate attorney who seemed to need a great amount of attention. He's never been married and he's a lonely old guy apparently losing his mind. The signing took 2.5 hours and it was only 95 pages.

I didn't have the heart to control this senior former partner attorney from Grubb & Ellis who wanted to whine and completely read each document. He told me from the onset he'd be reading them all in spite of my letting him know of the 3 day recission period that didn't matter to him at all.

He retired from law in 1994 and felt the need to give me his opinions on most all of the documents and then calculate things in his head. He was stubborn and complained I allegedly put the loan application at the end to stump him (it was full of a lot of errors).

Don't get me wrong, he was very nice and we laughed a lot as I tried to lighten it up a bit. There was a huge storm brewing last night in San Francisco and I was on an eBike worried about getting stuck in it. Luckily I missed the storm on the way home.

That was such a ridiculous signing, what does one do when stubborn seniors insist on taking up one's time to such a degree? I was grateful at least it wasn't busy and that I didn't book a rental car.

Sincerely yours,

Notary's Life
