I'd suggest marketing to the general public as you normally would - internet websites, local newspapers, place business cards around town, etc etc. You might make an appointment with the ombudsman, patient advocate or the administrator of the nursing homes. Let them know you realize they have a notary on staff but you're available evenings and nights and would appreciate being considered when their notary is not available.

Beware: I'm not so sure they prefer you due to "privacy issues" - if people are in a nursing home, that nursing home already knows all their business simply by virtue of the admission process. It's possible the nursing home, for privacy issues, doesn't allow outside notaries to come in and notarize for their patients, or it's possible the patients in the nursing home are not competent enough to sign documents on their own behalf - in either event it's possible the family is trying to do an end-around the system to accomplish what they want. I got tangled up in a situation like that and it was not pleasant.

Other things to keep in mind: (a) the mental condition of the patients by late day and nighttime - it's called "sundowning" and you don't want to be signing people who experience that - they are confused and have no idea what they're signing; (b) are they medicated, which can impair their mental faculties; (c) do they have current photo ID, which is required. One family member insisted to me that Oh yeah, she has ID - he went and checked ... expired and issued in 2004, so no good for my purposes; (d) witness requirements - many times nursing home employees are not allowed to act as witnesses. so family is going to have to make sure they have that under control.

I'll do them but I personally don't like nursing home calls for all of the above reasons. Also for these reasons, make sure you make it clear that your fee is $xx for the notarization and $xx for your time and travel - and stress that your time and travel fee of $xx is payable in advance and is payable no matter if you can accomplish the notarization or not....with nursing home calls there's a real good chance you won't be able to do it.

Good Luck.

Linda

Hi Everyone

I am new on the notary seen and have a question hoping I can get some help with. I have noticed in my area that elderly customers that are in nursing or senior living homes, although there is a notary on site prefer my mobile notary services and don not want the notary on site to notarize their documents due to privacy. How can I market to these types of customers when there is a notary on site but may not be available 24/7 like I am? What would be my marketing tool to obtain some of these customers without creating conflict with the notary on site? I want to be able to offer my services for the request of privacy to these types of customers.Any advice or feedback will be greatly appreciated. I am in the state of Maryland.
