The first mistake that was made is that you allowed these companies to owe you a substantial amount of money. In my 15 years of signing loans, I only lost $500 to non payment because I did my research.

Before you even take a signing, the first thing you need to do is check out the company with the Better Business Burea which only takes a few seconds to do online. 123 Notary and other notary organizations have discussion boards and forums you can look into as well. Another big thing you can try is googling the company name and see what comes up.

Keep track of these companies by preparing a list of base fees. In the process you can also flag non-paying companies. This way you will know ahead of time who you can trust. Doing your research is vital to succeeding in this business. It can save you a lot of time and money in the end.

If it makes you feel any better, I empathize with you completely. Every year since I have done this job (12 yrs), I have had to write off about 400-500 worth of work, not paid for. No mistakes on jobs, no errors, docs were received etc. No one calls back, and many of them are out of business.

I built up a big bill like that in the past. Since then I check the rating of companies here and other sites to make sure they have a good rep before working with them. I gave each one plenty of chance, then I sent an email (sent certified letter as well) saying, "You have until X date to send payment or I will report your non-payment to all notary rating sites, report you to the Real Estate Board, and I will contact the Title/Escrow companies that paid you to let them know you are not paying your notaries (for signing services)". Most of the clients cared enough to avoid trouble and pay. A few did not but I cut my losses and worked with only reputable companies from then on.

I have been in this business for 10 years. Spending time working on collections is frustrating and futile. How can we have absolutely no recourse to get paid for the work we did! I am owed over $2000 that I will probably never see. To me, that is a lot of money. What can I do besides send e-mails that bounce back and leave VM's that are never returned?
