Using social media is fun and interactive, but its about ten times as much work as you think. Social media is a great way to connect with existing and new customers, get to know them, and exchange ideas. But, how does social media really work?
If you offer a service, you might have friends or followers connected to your social media profile on facebook for example. This makes you visable to all of your friends friends. If you are in Seattle, and have a lot of facebook friends in seattle, their friends can see that you are a notary public, and perhaps contact you to use your services.
Its all about the content.
If your social media is purely social, your friends can find out what you did for the holidays and stay in touch. But, if your profile has a business name and business related content, you can attract new customers. Having good resource information helps too. Its good to have links to articles and informative things to say on your profile to make your profile HELPFUL to your followers.
Blogging.
My webmaster says that 34% of all business decisions these days are made based on what blogs say. That is powerful. If you write an informative blog, others will read your blog and pick up articles on search engines. You can establish yourself as a source of knowledge through blogs and gain a loyal following which can turn into customers.
Twitter
Twitter is primarily for broadcasting and not a practical tool for interaction. Twitter is a great way to gain new contacts to direct towards your existing networks and sources of information. You can send tweets about your latest blog article or something fascinating on your forum or website. However, there are too many twitter profiles out there, and users are now being restricted as to how many profiles they can follow. All these restrictions are making it harder to get numbers on your Twitter profile following you.
What is the SECRET to Twitter success?
If I knew, I would write a book and make millions. My guess is that anyone can start a twitter network and get a certain amount of fans. Getting fans is easy, keeping them is not so easy. If you bore them, they will leave. You can keep tweeting mediocre tweets about mediocre subjects and links to "tired" webpates, but in the long run, how many people will keep reading your tweets and clicking on your links? The only solution I can think of is to identify what content your browsers absolutely love and give them a regular stream of what I call highly optimized content - meaning content that they can't resist and that attracts the maximum amount of readers. That is really hard work, but its the only way that makes sense to grow a large following.
