I'm sorry, but I don't find that to be ethical from my understanding of what happened - but perhaps there are details that would change my mind.

The notary that called you - lacking details, I'm assuming they were probably one of the notaries that had declined the job, is that correct?

The details that might change my mind are the time factors. It sounds like this was scheduled maybe a few days in advance. The second notary - did she ALSO schedule with them, or were they just passing along a tip for a job?

Bottom line - it's not about what 'they' do, it's about what we do.

It was an "emergency" job. And a complex one. The husband was to fly into Kennedy airport to sign a form allowing the son to return to the USA. Son was scheduled to fly out of Kennedy an hour later. Wife books the job (expensive due to distance, traffic, parking fees and waiting time) and thanks me over and over because several other notaries had refused to get involved with this time consuming job. It was also to be in the "wee hours" of the morning!
Several hours later, I get a call from a fellow notary asking if I would be interested in an "airport" job with the same cell number as the job I had booked!
REVENGE TIME - and to use any other term but "REVENGE" would not be honest to the forum. In the evening of the job - at about 9PM I call the wife and tell her that 1) my fee is double and 2) she has to come to me with cash. VERY annoyed with me she says "but we have an agreement for half that amount, and that I was to be paid at the airport". I "gently" told her about the call from one of my peers - 3 hours after she booked with me. I also said that "as you are shopping around" I would not risk going on such a late, long, and expensive trip only to find that someone else did the job. Also that the fee was double because SHE "broke the contract" and treated me unfairly.
Bottom Line: my double fee was delivered IN CASH - by a taxi. I did the job without problems and feel my procedure was justified.
