ME - Mobile Notary Fees A Maine notary public may charge any travel fee they feel is appropriate. Maine Notary Fees There is no schedule of fees that a Notary Public must charge. The only statutory reference to fees is found in 4 M.R.S.A. Section 958 which specifies a charge of $1.50 in the course of a lawsuit to provide for the notification of parties, making of certificate and recording the proceedings. For other services, the Notary Public may determine the fees to be charged. Given the fact the citizens of the State of Maine are placing trust in Notaries Public when seeking their services, it would be most inappropriate to charge fees which are unreasonable or unfair. ME - Information of Interest A Maine notary public can perform a marriage which is only possible in a few states. Here is some related official text from the state website: "Notary Public is an ancient office with many citations throughout Maine statutes. The primary duty is to formally witness transactions involving paper documents. Maine Notaries, like those in Florida and South Carolina, can officiate at weddings. But there is no reciprocity with other states - this means that out-of-state Notaries or Justices of the Peace cannot obtain permission to officiate at marriages in Maine. Only Maine adult residents can become and function as Maine Notaries Public. One interesting fact is that notaries and most appointed or commissioned state officials must be sworn into office by a Dedimus Justice. A Dedimus Justice is appointed by the Governor for life. Applications for this position are handled by the notary office.
