Signature by Mark

Function: noun

Signature by Mark -- also called Signature by X is an uncommon way of notarizing a signer. It is a last resort, and only for those who legitimately can not sign their name. Elderly signers, often bedridden in convelescent homes or hospitals represent the majority of people who have this type of signing procedure done.

This type of signing requires teh use of two subscribing witnesses who not only witness the principal signing their X, but each witness signs one half of the signers name on the document and the journal as well. It is good to document the names of the subscribing witnesses on the document and the journal as well, with phone numbers, ID information and anything else that you consider helpful -- just in case!

Definition 1:
Elderly or disabled signers sometimes do a signature by mark is they are unable to complete their normal signature. Signature by mark usually constitutes signing with an "X". There is a procedure involved using subscribing witnesses. Please check your state notary law to see if you are allowed to notarize this type of "mark". Please see, "subscribing witnesses".
