Manual

Each state has some type of notary handbook or manual. The purpose of the manual is to discuss what is needed to know to apply to become a notary public, as well as understanding all of the notary laws and procedures applicable to the particular state.

Many state notary divisions (often run by the Secretary of State) have a PDF file with the manual or guidebook, while other states allow the notary to ask the book to be sent to them by mail.

The various types of notary acts and notary fees are also discussed in the manual. Acts such as Acknowledgments, Jurats, Oaths, Affirmations, Protests, and other notary acts will be discussed. Most states have a maximum fee that can be charged for each notary act, and that is discussed in the manual. The state's journal and seal requirements, and the types of acceptable certificate verbiage for each type of notarial act will also be elaborated upon.

Issues pertaining to dual state notary commissioning will also be addressed in the manual. If you live in one state, but want a commission in a neighboring state, the manual will let you know if its possible to fill out an application for that office.

Good luck with your state's notary manual. Read it carefully, because you are responsible for upholding all laws related to notary public during your notary commission.
