I do not have any walk up notary business. I offer mobile notary service by appointment. There is a phone number on my business card, but no address, so they can't drop in my location unexpectedly. The business address on my website is my mailbox address, not my physical address. So, they can't drop in.

If someone has my business card and calls for an appointment I am not required to serve them immediately. Being unavailable is not refusing service. If I am already booked for a scheduled appointment, I explain that I am already booked, but that I can schedule an appointment to meet with them at another time.

The business card dispenser idea is useful when you are going to an event or location with lots of foot traffic. It is a form of low cost guerrilla marketing.

This week I saw a new twist to car sign advertising. I saw a local Courier vehicle with the company name and phone number on the side and back of the SUV. But they also had a large QR Code on the back. This allows people to snap a photo of the QR code with their smartphone camera, rather than writing down the company information. Then they can use a QR phone app such as QR Droid to decode it and display the company information.

You could also have a window decal with a QR code under your business name and phone number. If your business card dispenser is empty, they can snap a photo of your QR Code.

I like that idea! I'd hang it on the window of the door that has my magnetic sign. Although Ken has a point. I wouldn't hang it up while between notarizations/loan signings for the reasons he mentioned.

But on your own time why not? Take my example of the mall again. What are the chances the person going to have the documents on them at that moment? And if they do, I'd gladly take 10 - 15 minutes to notarized a document without having to go out of my way. Then again in California we get to charge $10 so makes it a little more worth it.

In any case they're more likely not going to have the docs with them so they end up taking your card and calling you later to set up an appointment! Just have to remember to take it down before you drove off, haha...

Thanks 007, you sir won yourself a shaken martini.

Here in NY state the official "you go to the notary" fee is 2$. Of course as a mobile notary, with fees based on effort expended - one can earn more. Hanging a sign invites "walk up" 2$ interruptions to my schedule. Also, it's illegal (in NY) to refuse to notarize. Do you really want "walk up" base fee work, which can delay your trip to the higher paying job?

I do as a secondary source of advertising. I found a really good deal from vistaprint. You can get a set of 11x17 door magnets for $35 dollars. You have the option to choose from hundreds of designs or create your own. I of course made my own using my company's logo. Turned out pretty darn good as you can see the logo and number from a pretty far distance.

That said, I have yet to receive any business as a result of having them on my car (been a month). However, for $35 if I get even one job as a result it will more than pay for it.

Keep in mind that a major downside is that you have to be very careful of your driving while having them on. Let your road rage get the better of you and happen to tick off the wrong person, they can turn around and tell their friends and family or even their whole community not to do business with you.

Other than that, I prefer magnets to stickers because for one you can remove or reposition them at your will. Also I hear they do less damage to your vehicle's paint vs. stickers. Stickers I believe can peel your paint off after being on for several years in the hot sun. With magnets you can risk scratching your paint if too much dust gets between the magnet and door and if you leave them on for extended periods of time you can end up with a dark patch of paint where the magnets were placed. But both those can be prevented with a prior coat of wax and regular cleaning.

Overall I highly suggest doing it as it is an inexpensive source of mobile advertising, especially if you are able to park right in front of an entrance of a Wal-Mart or local Mall.

I have magnet signs on my car. My daughter (16 yrs old) gives me a hard time about them until last week when she was in my car and I got a phone call from someone driving behind us.

Signed right, the first time.

Does anyone use a car sign for mobile advertising of notary services? If so, what kind of sign do you use? Magnetic door sign, window decal, bumper sticker, business card or brochure dispenser? Have you gotten any new business from it?
