Become a South Dakota notary public Requirements To become an SD notary, you must submit a South Dakota notary application, file an oath, and a $5000 bond. There is a $25 filing fee as well. The notary term is for six years. You must be a U.S. citizen to become an SD notary public. The application is extremely short and only wants your name, address, if you have ever been a notary before, and when your commission expired, as well as if you have ever been convicted of a felony. Then there is an oath. The wording for the oath is below.
