Become a Maryland Notary Public
Before submitting your Maryland notary application, you should know about the duties and responsibilities
of being a Maryland notary public. You can obtain an application from the Secretary of State's notary
division. There is a $20.00 processing fee for all applications. To complete the Maryland notary
application, Maryland residents will need to have your legislative district, election district, precinct
number, and the name of your State Senator. Non-Maryland residents should select the county or City of
Baltimore in which you would like to be commissioned, which is generally the county in which you work.
A state senator will decide whether or not you are approved to be a notary public. If approved, then the
Secretary of State's office will issue a notary commission for you and forward it to the clerk of the
circuit court of the county in which you are going to be commissioned. You will be informed by a mailed
notification that your commission is waiting for you. There is another $11.00 fee for the clerk. You
must be commissioned within thirty days of receiving your notification. Commissioned notaries must purchase
a Maryland notary seal and registry of official acts. Each notary act must be recorded in the registry.
A registry can be purchased from stationary stores, or through one of the many notary associations.
