JuratPhonetics: ju·rat \'jur-ˌat\ Function: noun Sometimes signers appear before a notary public and are not sure what type of notary act to request. The notary can not prescribe a notary act, since that constitutes practicing law. However, the most common notarial acts are Jurats and Acknowledgments.
California and many other states started requiring positive identification for signers when executing Jurats around 2002-2006 as a reaction to several serious acts of notarial fraud that were related to 9/11.
